The BMD-3 is the third in the series, entering production in 1989 at the Volgograd tractor plant and is only in service with Russian Airborne Forces.

Firepower:

Main gun is the 2A42 30mm auto-cannon. It can elevated from -5 to +75 degree’s. A total of 860 rounds are carried.

Coaxial Machine Gun is 7.62mm and 2000 rounds are carried.

Roof mounted AT-4 / AT-5 Wire Guided Anti-Tank Missile launcher. 4 missile are carried.

Bow mounted 40mm grenade launcher. 551 rounds are carried.

Bow 5.45mm Machine Gun and 2160 rounds are carried.

The Russian BMD-3 IFV

Protection:

The light aluminium armour, which is rated for heavy MG & artillery splinters, uses a new aluminium material. The vehicle also has an NBC protection and 3 smoke grenade launchers either side of the main guns on the turret.

Mobility:

The vehicle uses the 2V-60-2 diesel engine, which develops 450hp. It also uses Hydropneumatic suspension and providing a top road speed of 71km/h and range of 500km.

The vehicle is also fully amphibious and is propelled in the water by two rear water jets to a speed of 10km/h. Just before entering the water, a front trim vain is erected and pumps activated.
