I've attached a diagram that I hope will help you with the argument. Basically, with sloped armour, the projectile has more armour to penetrate at a given angle than if the armour was vertical.

Ok i understand well the properties of sloped armour....the arguement is, does Sloped armour also have a weight reduction benefit..

My reasoning is this: Take an imaginary line from the commanders hatch down to the gun trunnions. Using sloped armour its a straight forward thing giving...say... 5 inches of protection.

His reasoning is this: Because you need a longer piece of armour for the slope than for the vertical, sloped armour doesnt give any weight reductions at all.

My rebuttal : If we use a vertical piece of armour we would have to go straight up from the trunnions and then across to the commanders hatch (still giving the 5 inches of protection) which is going to be a longer piece of armour therefore heavier.

Im wondering if any of you guys know of or can point me in the direction of any information/people (like a Challenger designer would be great!!) with which i can beat this stubborn headed idiot round the head with.

He came up with some french (surrender monkeys!!) company which makes sloped armour addons. I need better !!

And Dave...is that a tanky rank slide you be wearing sir?

A tank turret's frontal armour can be either vertical or sloped. It consists of a single piece of armour, either side of the gun. Neither Vertical, nor sloped armour includes a horizontal piece of armour at the top, what is there is merely part of the turret's roof, which does not get counted as part of the turret's frontal armour. (See attached diagram.) The same applies whether it's vertical or sloped armour. Therefore, sloped armour does not provide a weight benefit over vertical armour, as explained in numerous web sites, including the following wikipedia article;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sloped_armor (There is a good diagram and explanation to the right of the section called 'The Principle of Sloped Armour').

Your assertion that vertical armour is heavier due to some kind of horizontal plate at the top is therefore wrong. As I've already said, the only horizontal plate at the top of either vertical or sloped armour, is the turret's roof; and again, like I've already said, the roof isn't counted as part of the turret's frontal armour.

I've searched other websites, and I can't find any that states that vertical armour is heavier because of some kind of horizontal plate at the top. They all agree with the wikipedia article, in that sloped armour gives no weight advantage over vertical armour.

I think we are slightly missing something here chaps. Its not just about weight or thickness of sloped armour, its the slope. It means the incoming round doesnt have a flat surface to penetrate, its deflected. The vertical armour sloped replaced had to be thicker as vertical armour is easier to penetrate.

With respect Dave, as Cat said earlier, we know all about the principles of sloped armour (slope, thickness, deflection etc etc) but the particular point Cat was making in the original post, was about weight advantage, and that was the point I was responding to.
