For me it will always be the Chieftain and of course crewed by Tankies!

Four main reasons why...

1. It was the first proper Main Battle Tank

2. We invented the reclining drivers seat so lowered the hulls profile

3. It was the most heavily armoured tank in the world for many years, beating the other NATO tanks like the M60, Leopard 1, AMX-30.

4. The French always claimed that the Leclerc had the longest main gun in NATO, which is cr%p! there's is 50 or 52cal length of the top of my head, but the Chieftains L11 was a cal Length 55! so it was the UK no France.

Wasnt the Centurion considered the first MBT ? Chieftain is by far the coolest sounding tank !

Just been listening to the Tank Museum's Audio Tour and David Foster is talking about the Centurion and Chieftain; now I understand why Chieftain is regarded as the first true Main Battle Tank! It's because it was the first to blend all three characteristics of armour (inspite of its unreliable engine). The Centurion was merely the first step along the way towards developing the MBT (unless you count the WW2 T34 as the first step!).

Just been browsing throught the video section and found lots of videos of retired Chieftain tanks being used to crush cars for cheap entertainment. FFS! What an undignified end for a great old tank! Why can't the old retired tanks be put to better use, like old warships being sunk to create artificial reefs?
